The Voyage Home - Riverside History Center is a museum and gift shop dedicated to exhibiting items related to the Riverside, Iowa, area. It opened its doors in June 2008 and is operated by volunteers. With Riverside being the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk, one room has been dedicated to a Star Trek-related science fiction theme. Another area is devoted to the history of Riverside, including exhibits of area century farms and houses. The Center's exhibits are ever-evolving, so drop in when you get a chance and learn something new.
Also in 2005, Washington County residents passed a referendum to allow a gaming operation to be annexed east of Riverside. Consequently, the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort broke ground in the fall of 2005 and opened its doors on August 31, 2006. The destination resort features a luxury hotel with an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, a spa, an event center, restaurants, two boutiques, and a casino that was approved by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. The Blue Top Ridge golf course, designed by world-renowned Rees Jones, opened June 2007.

With all of its progress, our town still possesses a friendly, small-town atmosphere. The elementary school is located in town and Highland Middle and High School building is located eight miles south of Riverside. Highland Community School District has an enrollment of approximately 665 students.

Riverside is served by the volunteer Riverside Community Fire Department and a volunteer First Responders emergency unit.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, registered with the National Historical Registry, and Trinity United Methodist Church are located within two blocks of each other.
Riverside also has a very nice Senior Village located within walking distance of our downtown and three city parks.
Our VFW 6414, located along the southern bank of the English River just south of downtown, is the local chapter of the national organization. Its members and auxiliaries enthusiastically donate time, money, and effort to causes that aid veterans in Iowa and the rest of the country. The walls of the meeting room are lined with pictures of the members when they were in the military. Local artist Lefty Wilson painted a wonderful mural that represents the major conflicts of the 20th century and the various branches of the service. The VFW is open to all; you’re welcome to visit when you get a chance.

Riverside is easily accessible and located approximately 12 miles south of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa; 35 miles south of Cedar Rapids; and 15 miles south of Interstate 80 with easy access via four-lane Highway 218. The city of Washington, the county seat, is 13 miles south of our growing community.

Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere is a not-for-profit organization that provides a golf instructional program for eligible injured or disabled Iowa-based veterans who use the Iowa City VA Health Care System.
The G.I.V.E. Model:
GIVE is the result of a partnership between the Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux Falls VA Health Care Systems, which recommends and screens veteran participants; the Iowa PGA Section, which brings PGA expert instruction and Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, Grans Falls Casino and Golf Resort, and Warrior Run Golf Course.
Mission Statement:
Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere is a not-for-profit organization that provides a golf instructional program for eligible injured or disabled Iowa-based veterans who use the Iowa City VA Health Care System. The GIVE program features a five-week training curricu- lum that enhances an injured veteran’s and accompanying family members’ mental, social, physical, and emotional well-being and improves their quality of life.

Blue Top Ridge at Riverside, Iowa PGA Section and the VA Medical Center in Iowa City Launch Recreational Golf Program for Injured Veterans

RIVERSIDE, Iowa – Veterans being seen at the Iowa City VA Medical Center with disabilities will now have the opportunity to learn and play the game of golf for recreational activity due to the partnership of three area entities. The VA Medical Center in Iowa City, the Iowa PGA Section and Riverside Casino & Golf Resort established the G.I.V.E. (Golf for Injured Veterans Everywhere) Foundation which will raise money to fund the Golf for Veterans program, for injured and Iowa Veterans with disabilities.
The golf program will have four phases of training for veterans to participate in to enhance injured veteran’s mental, social, physical, and emotional well-being; and improve their quality of life. The phases include; introduction of golf (rules, equipment, dress, scoring, etiquette, etc.), indoor instruction at Riverside Casino and Resort, practice outdoors at Blue Top Ridge and the final phase will have veterans playing rounds of golf at Blue Top Ridge.
Iowa VA Medical Center Director Barry Sharp praised the program calling it a “truly unique partnership” that our veterans will benefit from. “We could not be more pleased to have the Golf for Veterans Program start in Iowa City; it shows a commitment from Iowa businesses and organizations to our veterans. It will bring great enjoyment to our veterans and their families.”

“The Iowa PGA Section is excited to connect our more than 170 members and some 100 apprentices with our country’s veterans of the Armed Forces to whom we owe so much,” said Iowa PGA Section President Ken Schall of Des Moines. “The Golf for Veterans Program has unlimited potential to bring more people into the game of golf.”
The PGA Professionals and golf professional and staff at Blue Top Ridge at Riverside developed the training materials for the course and will volunteer their time for the program. The Golf for Veterans Program is expected to be up and running by late summer. The Grand Opening of Blue Top Ridge at Riverside on August 1st will be a charity event to raise money for the G.I.V.E. Foundation.
